SA: Kelvin Momo makes history with record-breaking album Thato Ya Modimo

Released on 30 May 2025, Thato Ya Modimo is Kelvin Momo’s most ambitious and personal work to date. The album debuted at number eight on Spotify’s Top Global Albums chart — one of the highest entries ever for an amapiano release — and set a new record for the most-streamed album within 24 hours on Spotify South Africa, garnering over 1.8 million streams. The previous record was held by his own 2024 album, Sewe.

Within days, Thato Ya Modimo surpassed 10 million streams across all digital streaming platforms (DSPs). All 29 tracks entered Apple Music South Africa’s Top 50, an achievement that underscores both the album’s widespread appeal and Kelvin Momo’s growing global impact.

A follow-up to the critically acclaimed Ntsako (2024), the new album explores themes of identity, growth, and musical innovation. “Thato is a journey back to self,” Kelvin Momo said. “It’s my name, my sound, and my spirit — shared with everyone who’s grown with me.”

The album opens with ‘Buya’, a poignant and final collaboration with the late vocalist Yallunder. Other notable features include amapiano stalwarts Murumba Pitch, Babalwa M, Thatohatsi, and Stixx, as well as newcomers such as gospel singer Nontokozo Mkhize and rising star Jinger Stone.

Standout tracks include the hypnotic ‘Ethongweni’, featuring Kabza De Small and Cnethemba Gonelo, and ‘Soweto Grooves 3.0’, the latest instalment in one of Momo’s most beloved musical series.

Production credits also include Da Muziqal Chef, Tycoon, Omit ST, Nvcho, and Stixx, who contribute to the album’s rich soundscapes, characterised by melodic piano progressions, layered percussion, and spiritual undertones, all trademarks of Momo’s distinctive style.

Thato Ya Modimo arrives ahead of Kelvin Momo’s headline performance at Red Bull Symphonic Johannesburg, an orchestral showcase that will reimagine his catalogue in a live symphonic format, a first for the amapiano genre and a testament to his artistic evolution.
