SA: Khuzani receives Cultural Icon Award at Oxford leadership summit

The award was presented by Oxford Lord Mayor Councillor Chewe Munkonge at an event attended by leaders, diplomats and other guests.

The Nelson Mandela Leadership Awards recognise individuals for contributions to their countries, communities and professional fields. Khuzani’s recognition highlights the international reach of maskandi and its links to Zulu cultural heritage.

Khuzani has built a career in contemporary maskandi while maintaining a focus on isiZulu storytelling and cultural themes. His recent honours include the 2024 South African Music Award for Best Maskandi Album for Angidlali Nezingane and the Best Maskandi award at the 2026 Metro FM Music Awards for Umanikinikana.

“I would like to sincerely thank everyone who has continuously supported my music and my journey,” Khuzani said. “Every person who buys my music, streams it, shares it, attends my performances and continues to believe in Maskandi has contributed to this achievement.”

Khuzani has also worked in music production, distribution and events through Indlamlenze Group & Production, which he established in 2011. The company’s activities include physical and digital music distribution, event production and the development and management of emerging artists.

The Oxford award adds to Khuzani’s previous honours, including a South African Music Award, the DStv Mzansi Viewers’ Choice Award for Favourite Music Artist or Group and Ukhozi FM’s Song of the Year.

His latest recognition comes as maskandi continues to receive greater visibility through national music awards and international performances, while artists in the genre seek to maintain its linguistic and cultural traditions while reaching new audiences.
