SA: Lady Zamar returns with new single Russian Roulette
16 May 2025 - 07:54
South African artist Lady Zamar has made a comeback with her latest single, ‘Russian Roulette’. The emotionally charged track marks the beginning of a new creative chapter for the genre-defying artist.
Known for her fearless approach to music and her refusal to be boxed into a single genre, Lady Zamar once again demonstrates her ability to craft compelling, emotionally resonant soundscapes. ‘Russian Roulette’ is an intimate reflection on the tension of a friendship hovering on the brink of romance. Using games as a central metaphor, the song captures the emotional risk of love, with themes of uncertainty, longing and vulnerability.
Playful in rhythm yet grounded in sound, the track’s chorus invokes the spirit of truth or dare, cleverly reimagined as an adult challenge: “Will you take the risk? Will you bet on love?” A standout moment comes in the form of a verse delivered in West African pidgin, a stylistic nod to the pan-African influences driving this latest musical era.
“This song is about daring to speak unspoken feelings, about risking vulnerability,” Lady Zamar said. “It’s playful, it’s intense, it’s a little chaotic, just like love can be.”
‘Russian Roulette’ is the first release from Lady Zamar’s upcoming body of work, currently referred to as the Summer Era, a thematic and sonic world that blends storytelling, rich sound design, and symbolic visuals. Drawing inspiration from African music legends and the global rise of Afro-centric sounds, the forthcoming project explores a fusion of Afrobeats, house, soul and pop.
The new single follows her 2024 release ‘Rainbow’, which featured Afrobeat-influenced tracks that expanded her global footprint and reaffirmed her commitment to sonic evolution. As with her previous work, Lady Zamar continues to produce much of her own material, crafting layered and cinematic compositions where each track tells a unique story.
Since her breakout with hits like ‘Charlotte’, ‘My Baby’, and ‘Collide’, Lady Zamar has built a reputation as one of the continent’s most versatile and innovative artists. Her platinum-selling debut King Zamar received critical acclaim and multiple awards, followed by the introspective Monarch, which showcased her growth as a songwriter and producer.
