South African DJ and producer Mobi Dixon has released his new album Mobi Tek Volume 1. The project is available for download and streaming on all major streaming platforms.
The 10-track collection offers an explosive mix of dance music including effervescent electro and Afro-tech elements. It boasts heavy yet minimal grooves, stabbing baselines and futuristic melodies. The collection marks the first volume of a series which will explore the multiple facets of house music in South Africa.
The album features a number of local musicians, including amapiano's finest vocal powerhouses Lady Du, Soulful G and Babalwa M, with appearances from Afro-house mainstays NaakMusiq and Mafikizolo.
The producer recently praised Lady Du who is featured on the hit song ‘Abakithi’, which he said inspired the album. Mobi Dixon said he attempted to produce a project which appeals to listeners globally.
“I got a lot of criticism for dropping this when my previous album was not even a year old,” he said. “A lot of people were surprised because I normally take two to three years to drop an album but that song ‘Abakithi’ was telling a story of what was happening in my life at the time. I am pitching the material to a global market and not only local. But with the crossover, I never want to lose the local market.”
His previous album When House Was House recently won the gong for Best Produced Music Video for the single of the same title at the 2022 South African Music Awards.
Over the past decade, Mobi Dixon has been leading the charge in South African Afro-house alongside fellow musicians like Msaki and Samthing Soweto.
