SA: Vusi Mahlasela to headline Jazz at Jozi Gold on 25 July

Known as “The Voice”, Mahlasela has built a career spanning more than three decades, with music that explores themes of hope, reconciliation, memory and humanity. His work has been closely associated with South Africa's democratic journey, establishing him as one of the country's prominent musical storytellers.

Mahlasela has performed internationally and collaborated with artists including Sting, Paul Simon, Dave Matthews Band, Hugh Masekela and Angélique Kidjo. His Jozi Gold performance is expected to draw from his extensive catalogue and feature material from his forthcoming album, Questions and Answers.

The performance follows recent appearances by Sydney Mavundla and Linda Sikhakhane, as the weekly programme continues to feature established and emerging figures in South African jazz.

“What makes the series special is the range of artists and audiences it continues to bring together,” Jozi Gold spokesperson Gynis Jardine said. “Each Saturday offers a different expression of South African jazz, from established icons to artists shaping its future. Vusi Mahlasela is an important part of that story.”

The programme will continue through August, with performances scheduled from Maleh on 1 August, Keenan Ahrends on 8 August, Abathwebuli Trio on 15 August, Louis Mahlanga on 22 August and Herbie Tsoaeli on 29 August.
