Sony Masterworks partners with Wise Music Group

The partnership will see Sony Masterworks and Wise Music working together to sign recording and publishing contracts with new songwriters in the classical genre, with the aim of developing long-term careers.

The first two signings under the new agreement are post-classical composer Eydís Evensen and instrumental duo Hugar.

“We are excited to be working with the creative and experienced team at Wise Music Group to further grow our business in the UK and around the world,” Sony Music Masterworks president Mark Cavell said.

“By bringing together the incomparable skills and experience of both teams, we can offer artists the best possible home for their recorded and published works.”

Wise Music Group head of classical publishing James Rushton said: “We are delighted to be able to explore hand in glove with our long-time friends Sony Music Masterworks new relationships with new writers. The potential of the resultant joined-up thinking of our creative teams is indeed exciting.”

The agreement bolsters Sony Masterworks’ portfolio and adds to its strategic growth initiatives in support of the company’s roster of artists.

Sony Masterworks recently acquired film and television score and soundtrack specialist Milan Records and a 100% stake in event promoter Raymond Gubbay.

The Sony Music company, on the other hand, acquired a majority stake in concert promotion and production company Senbla in August last year. Additionally, the company recently established a new booking agency called RoadCo, which specialises in live events and attractions.

Wise Music Group owns or controls about half a million copyrights and represents almost 100 composers and songwriters working in classical music, opera, ballet, pop, film, television and advertising, including Ólafur Arnalds, John Corigliano, Philip Glass, Hans Abrahamsen, Missy Mazzoli and Samuel Barber, among many others.
