Sony Music Publishing West Africa announces new signings

“We are super delighted to announce that the catalogue of the legends has found a new home at Sony Music Publishing,” the company confirmed on social media, adding that the move forms part of its vision of “bringing the iconic sounds of the legends to a new generation.”

Fuji music, steeped in Yoruba traditions, counts the above names among its most impactful ambassadors in shaping, modernising and bringing mainstream appeal to the genre.

Speaking about the deal, Ayuba, who started singing at seven years old and is best known for his bunsue fuji variant, said: “I have a talent to sing, [but] I don’t have the talent to manage myself. You must have a financial side taking care of your income, and that is exactly what Sony is here to do for us. I’m so happy to be with Sony Music Publishing.”

SMPWA also announced that it will now represent the works of the late Nigerian rapper Dagrin as part of its dedication to honouring the legacy of influential Nigerian artists across genres.

Dagrin, who died in 2010 aged 25, was known for blending Yoruba and English rap. He was behind projects like Still On The Matter (2006), C.E.O (Chief Executive Omoita) (2009), If I Die (2011) and Legends Never Die, Pt. 1 (2023).

“This has been his passion ever since he was young,” the musician’s sister, Oluwabukola Olaonipekun, welcoming the partnership, said. “It’s what he loved doing most.”

On what the deal means for Dagrin’s legacy, she noted: “It is a very big privilege for us. At least we know we are under one company, and we are very happy about it. Of course, I’m very excited about the fact that his songs will not die. It’s very encouraging.”

The latest signings add to a growing roster since SMP made its foray into West Africa in 2022 by opening an office in Lagos, Nigeria, with industry vet Godwin Tom as managing director. The company’s lineup of African artists includes Wizkid, Tems, Sarkodie and M.O.G Beatz.

“Africa has so much talent, culture and uniqueness to share with the rest of the world and I am excited to be a part of the incredible global network of teams that will help build a home for Africa’s best songwriters,” Tom said following his appointment.

Last month, SMP announced that it has completed a deal with Ghanaian label Lynx Entertainment, home to popstars like KiDi, Adina and DJ Vyrusky, as well as new voices Kasar, Maya Blu and DSL.

Other recent SMP signings include Nigerian pop singer Ric Hassani, gospel singer and songwriter Kachi Annuncia and producer and sound engineer SiGNAL.
