South Sudan: Emmanuel Jal releases new single ahead of Coachella performance
03 Mar 2025 - 14:27
South Sudanese musician and activist Emmanuel Jal has released his latest single, ‘Bilebile’, featuring fellow local artists Shammalee and Nyadollar.
The record is available for streaming and download on major digital platforms. Released under Sondela Recordings, the track arrives ahead of Jal’s landmark performance at the 2025 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, where he will take the stage alongside Haitian DJ Francis Mercier—marking the first time a South Sudanese artist has ever performed at the festival.
The song is an anthem celebrating the determination of a hardworking woman whose resilience inspires those around her. The song’s radiant energy encourages listeners to embrace their inner light and persevere, regardless of life’s challenges.
“Nyadollar has a high-pitched, traditional sound influenced by Nuer culture, while Shamma’s voice is bold and modern in its delivery,” Jal said. “They are both South Sudanese and former refugees who grew up in Kenya, and I want to share my platform with them to ensure their voices are heard.” He further emphasised his commitment to authenticity in music, stating, “This is a crucial aspect of my work, helping it retain its essence while strengthening the messaging behind it.”
The song’s fusion of Afrohouse beats, traditional influences, and modern production results in an infectious rhythm and an empowering message that resonates deeply. Jal masterfully balances authenticity with contemporary appeal, crafting a track that feels both timeless and fresh.
Jal’s story is one of remarkable resilience, having survived as a child soldier in war-torn Southern Sudan before being rescued by British aid worker Emma McCune and smuggled to Kenya. Today, he uses his platform to inspire change, blending music, activism, and philanthropy to make a lasting impact.
