Soweto Theatre gears up for busy month-end

On Friday next week, the theatre presents live music programme Sounds of Soweto featuring Urban Village and Bantu Continua Uhuru Consciousness (BCUC). According to event organisers, Sounds of Soweto is an opportunity for the theatre to celebrate music legends while also discovering tomorrow’s voices.

The Soweto Theatre has also partnered with His and Hers Jams – a multimedia platform that focuses on artists who have little exposure in the mainstream media but experience huge support in the alternative youth culture space. The programme is supported by business catalyst J&B Hive Johannesburg, Nedbank, Arts Affinity, Arts and Culture Trust and Nine Nine Production.

McCoy Mrubata and Mark Hauser, together with Paul Hanmer, Thembinkosi Mavimbela and Bernice Boikanyo, will be performing live at the Soweto Theatre on Saturday, 25 February. Swiss saxophone player Hauser and his South African counterpart Mrubata were introduced to each other in 2000 by sound engineer and booking agent Mark Roth during Mrubata’s one-month stay in Basel, Switzerland. Mrubata was in the country to perform with students from the University of Basel. A result of their 16-year friendship has been to realise a project fusing African and European musical nuances.

Also on 25 February, Saturday, an Evening with Samthing Sowetoe – the talented musician who found fame as a founding member of the popular South African a cappella group The Soil – is one in a series of one-night-only performances with some of South Africa’s most talented vocalists. Accompanied by their bands, the singers perform two sets with a 20-minute interval. The evenings are tailored to showcase vocal talent and allow audiences to enjoy intimate performances.
