Stonebwoy, AKA win Nickelodeon awards

The awards ceremony, which took place for the first time in 1988, targets young Americans and has winners voted and chosen by viewers of Nickelodeon programmes across the world.

For African viewers, this year’s list of nominees had attracted attention mostly for the presence of Davido in the Favourite Global Music Star category. The media had covered the news widely and the Nigerian star had asked for his millions of social media followers to vote. The category also had BLACKPINK (Asia), Troye Sivan (Australia/New Zealand), David Guetta (Europe), Taylor Swift (US), J Balvin (Latin America) and HRVY (UK) receive nominations.

Unfortunately for the Nigerian, Taylor Swift won that award. But Davido’s presence as a nominee in the Favourite Global Music Star had eclipsed other categories, even ones dedicated to entertainers from the continent. The Favourite African Star and Favourite Southern African Star categories saw some of the most recognisable names in African entertainment go head to head.

Stonebwoy, actress Adesua Etomi-Wellington (Nigeria), media man IK Osakioduwa (Nigeria) and music group Sauti Sol (Kenya) were all nominated in the Favourite African Star category. Stonebwoy was named the winner. “I feel so good and grateful,” he said about his win in a pre-recorded video shown by the organisers. Over on social media, he shared the news. “Favourite African Star. Ghana won!! Thanks for Voting,” he wrote.

In the South African category, popular rapper AKA emerged the winner. "It gives me great pride to accept this Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Award on behalf of my daughter and all of the Megacy," he wrote online. "Thank You so much for all the votes. So amazing to have the young ones rocking with me as their #1 after 10+ years in the game. From Africa to the world"
