The Music In Africa Foundation (MIAF) is proud of its partnership with the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) as a Strategic Implementing Partner (SIP) for its Social Employment Fund (SEF). Through this collaboration, MIAF is running a national programme that is creating jobs, addressing skills gaps, and strengthening South Africa's creative industries — in line with the SEF's overarching goal to generate work for the common good and build community value through employment, social contribution, and inclusive economic participation. Operating under the banner NEFCISA (National Employment Facility for Creative Industries in South Africa), the initiative is recruiting and training participants, matching them with host organisations, and has already placed 1 500 workers across the country — surpassing its original target of 1 000. NEFCISA is delivered through a network of 20 host organisations spanning five provinces, who are actively hosting participants and contributing to work for the common good across South Africa's creative and cultural industries. Key Objectives: Support employment and entrepreneurship in the creative industries. Offer skills development and training programmes. Foster partnerships between public and private creative sectors. Promote South African creativity at both provincial and national levels Foster community development through social contribution.

Music In Africa Gender @ Work is a three-year training programme aimed at upskilling and increasing the participation of female professionals in the African music sector. Launched by the Music In Africa Foundation (MIAF) in April 2019, the programme is connected to the MIAF’s ACCES music conference – a pan-African event held in a different African country every year. This connection enables the programme to reach new participants in a different African country every year. The programme marks the beginning of a more concerted effort by the Foundation to support the participation and inclusion of women in all facets of its programmes and the music sector in Africa as a whole. For cultural and creative practitioners and organisations operating in southern Africa, access to funding remains a major challenge. The COVID-19 pandemic has also had a massive impact on government policy, spending and the economy in general, and has seen spending on culture being moved further down the list of priorities. Further, the cultural and creative industries repeatedly cite four main areas where investment is needed for growth, which are increased visibility, mobility including access to new markets, finance and support structures.

Suno launches v6 AI music models with new editing and creation tools

AI music company Suno has launched v6, a new generation of music models that it says has been developed with industry partners including Warner Music Group, BMG and Believe.

Suno ceo Mikey Shulman.

The company said the new models are designed to provide users with greater control over music creation, while supporting different approaches to songwriting and production. The v6 generation includes three models aimed at professional artists and producers, emerging creators and casual users.

Suno said the release follows several years of development, including engagement with artists, producers, songwriters and musicians through regular writing camps. The company also said it had strengthened safeguards around the use of uploaded audio and lyrics.

According to Suno, the measures are intended to detect unauthorised use of material, provide greater transparency around the use of AI in music and reduce potential abuse of its tools.

The flagship v6 model will be available to Pro and Premier subscribers and is designed to provide more precise and consistent results across genres and styles. The v6-wild model, also available to Pro and Premier subscribers, is intended for more experimental and less predictable results.

The v6-mini model will be available to all users and is designed as a faster and more efficient option for turning ideas into songs.

Across the three models, Suno said v6 has improved its ability to interpret elements commonly used by musicians, including vocals, instrumentation, song structure, mood, references and overall musical feel.

The new generation also introduces additional editing and creation functions. Users can modify individual sections of existing songs using written instructions, combine elements from multiple sources, isolate and sample sections of recordings, and make changes to individual lyrics without rebuilding an entire track.

Suno said users can also begin music projects using text, audio, images or video, as well as describe a particular mood or combination of musical influences as a starting point for a new composition.

The company plans to retire its previous models as the v6 generation is rolled out.

Suno said the launch would also support the development of new products involving artists who voluntarily participate in the platform. Under the proposed model, participating artists would be compensated while fans would be offered additional ways to engage with their music.

The launch comes as Suno continues to develop partnerships with major music companies. In recent months, the company has announced agreements involving Warner Music Group, BMG and Believe as the music industry continues to negotiate licensing, copyright and compensation frameworks around generative AI.

Suno said its approach is intended to place human creativity at the centre of the development of AI music technology.
