Syssi Mananga shares Mbula single featuring Kane Mathis

The Afro-electro pop track, delivered in English, French and Lingala, addresses the urgent issue of climate change and its devastating impact on communities worldwide, especially in Africa. Its release on 28 July coincided with World Conservation Day, emphasising the song’s message of awareness and action.

‘Mbula’, which means ‘rain’ in Lingala, combines traditional African musical elements with modern electro-pop, creating a sound that is both innovative and deeply rooted in cultural heritage. The collaboration with Kane Mathis, a kora player based in New York, brings a unique and authentic touch to the track, highlighting the global nature of the climate crisis.

“‘Mbula’ is more than just a song; it is a powerful call to action,” a statement says. “The lyrics vividly describe the adverse effects of droughts, painting a stark picture of the challenges faced by communities affected by climate change. By releasing ‘Mbula’ on World Conservation Day, Syssi aims to inspire listeners to reflect on their environmental impact and to take meaningful steps toward conservation and sustainability.

Syssi Mananga is known for her unique fusion of Kongo rhythms, jazz, soul, zouk, and pop. Her music reflects her mixed heritage and addresses themes of empowerment, social justice, and environmental protection. Her debut album Retour aux Sources (2013) garnered international acclaim, while her second album Mopepe Mama (2021) continues to showcase her powerful vocals and storytelling abilities. She has won multiple awards, including the Couleurs talent competition by Radio France Internationale and the Beyond Music Project Award.

Kane Mathis, meanwhile, is a versatile musician and composer known for his mastery of the 21-string Mandinka harp (kora) and the Turkish oud. Beginning his studies in 1997 in The Gambia and later in Istanbul, he has performed internationally, earning recognition for his profound understanding and innovative interpretations of traditional music. Based in Brooklyn, New York, Mathis has received numerous accolades, including a Chamber Music America award and the Earshot Jazz Album of the Year award.
