Tanzania: Nash MC raising funds to support Swahili rappers

The initiative provides a platform for emerging artists to showcase in various towns and cities across the country. These artists can only use the Swahili language in their music.

Nash MC told Music In Africa that the organisation wanted to continue supporting the artists so they could sell their music and gain exposure.

“Last year we held so many concerts and several of those who took part have since recorded albums or moved on to become independent artists,” he said.

“The reason we insist on the Swahili language is because Tanzanian musicians have a bigger chance of breaking continental barriers and reaching a wider audience since Swahili is the second most spoken language in Africa.”

The rapped said he was planning to set up a recording studio to support artists, especially female rappers who were finding it difficult to break into the male-dominated music industry.

“During our organised concerts we work with female rappers, many of whom have given up on pursuing music beyond the platforms we provide due to sexual harassment. For their music to be played on radio or in the clubs, they have to grant sexual favours to radio presenters or DJs. Those who need to record are often invited to record in studio at night. It never ends well. Many talented women have quit because of this," Nash MC said.

KINASA also donates Swahili textbooks and storybooks to primary and secondary schools around the country.

Nash MC believes there are many job opportunities for those who speak fluent Swahili. "It would be a disappointment if the Tanzanian youth misses on those opportunities," he said.
