SA: The Joy release new Afro-pop single Omunye

The song blends Zulu and English lyrics and combines the group’s signature harmonies with contemporary pop production. ‘Omunye’ was developed in collaboration with songwriters and producers Gian Stone, whose previous credits include work with Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber, and Sol Was, who has worked with Beyoncé and Timbaland.

The single also continues the group’s collaboration with producer Two Inch Punch, as they prepare to release a new extended play.

According to the group’s team, ‘Omunye’ reflects an evolution in The Joy’s musical direction while retaining the vocal harmonies and South African influences that have defined their sound.

The release follows a period of growing international recognition for the KwaZulu-Natal quintet. The group has attracted support from artists including Justin Bieber, Alicia Keys, Doja Cat, Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith and Jennifer Hudson, and has collaborated with Doja Cat and The Blessed Madonna.

The Joy first gained widespread attention with their viral debut single ‘Isencane Lengane’ before releasing the EP Amabutho in 2021. They have since appeared on international television programmes including The Jennifer Hudson Show and Later... with Jools Holland.

Their recent projects have also included a collaboration with The Blessed Madonna on Shades of Love and a guest appearance on Jennifer Hudson’s Christmas album, The Gift of Love.

‘Omunye’ serves as the latest release from the group as they continue work on their upcoming EP while expanding their international profile.
