The Nigerian superstar, Tiwa Savage started promoting her new single, '49-99,' A week ago, culminated in a listening party in London running into the early hours of yesterday.
During a Q&A session at the listening party, she revealed what ‘49-99’ means. According to her, '49-99' stands for ‘Forty nine, ninety-nine’ and not ‘Four thousand, nine hundred and ninety-nine’ or ‘Four nine nine nine.’
It is a number that the Afrobeat creator, Fela Anikulapo Kuti came up with in his Shuffering and Shmiling album of 1978, 49 sitting 99 standing in the then popular Lagos mass transit Molue (bus). ‘But I wanted something, I wanted my first global single to have a message that we are suffering and smiling and music is a powerful tool. And I wanted a title which could be a conversation starter like 49 people sitting and 99 standing, like we’re suffering and smiling, it’s just a reflection of the economy and the imbalance with the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer’ according to Savage.
The provocative video addresses some political leaders who, instead of focusing on the growth of a nation, are there just for the money and having affairs with underage girls – while the citizenry is hustling hard to make a daily living, as it shares the hope of many young people’s hope of buying designer wears, expensive cars and having a lot of money.
The single produced by Pheelz on the Universal Music Group label is set to keep the fans dancing and it adds to the collection of hits for the Nigerian sweetheart.
