Sound Connects Fund

For cultural and creative practitioners and organisations operating in southern Africa, access to funding remains a major challenge. The COVID-19 pandemic has also had a massive impact on government policy, spending and the economy in general, and has seen spending on culture being moved further down the list of priorities. Further, the cultural and creative industries repeatedly cite four main areas where investment is needed for growth, which are increased visibility, mobility including access to new markets, finance and support structures.

It’s fair to say life has been unforgiving for many Kenyans in 2023 with the cost of living shooting through the roof. Add to this unending political tensions one year down the line after a tightly contested election and you get the reason why the man on the street is easily irritable. Thankfully, this wave of bleakness seems to melt away when it comes into contact with the good vibes transmitted by the music of local artists. In these hard times, music is just what the doctor ordered.

Bien.

So as the year comes to an end, we take a look at some of the jams that Kenyans have been pumping up in this difficult period. From upbeat dance tracks to soulful ballads, there’s something for everyone on this playlist. So grab your headphones and let’s dive into the songs that defined 2023. These tracks not only dominated the charts but also stole the hearts of fans in and outside of Kenya.

This dance hit is taking over social media platforms, radio and clubs. The track kicks off with Agikuyu lines delivered by Kenyan singer Sofiya Nzau and smoothly transitions into pulsating beats, courtesy of Brazilian producer Zerb. ‘Cham Thum’ (Atoti) by Watendawili

This rumba-flavoured track has all the makings of a classic. With simplicity at its core, it underscores the oft-repeated call: you don’t need to look across the pond to find artistic excellence. It’s right here in the motherland.

Within just two days of its release, the song soared to the top of YouTube’s trending list, a testament to the chemistry between Bahati and Nadia Mukami who effortlessly deliver this love track.

Departing from his typical hip hop style, Nyashinski embraces Afropop vibes to convey the cherished relationship with his partner. The music video, skilfully filmed by Justin Campos, features the couple immersed in hallucinatory graphics that capture the palpable emotions on the song.

‘Ma Cherie’ by Bien

It’s Baldman’s time to shine, and fans are rallying behind him. ‘Ma Cherie’ has sparked a TikTok challenge, with enthusiasts embracing classic Bien vibes. The music video – with nostalgic, vintage footage from Kenya showcasing the artist’s love for retro – still comes across as fresh and new.
