SA: TXC tease possible collaborations with Wizkid and Jorja Smith

The duo, comprising childhood friends Tarryn Reid and Clairise Hefke, disclosed the plans during an appearance on Apple Music’s The Dotty Show, where they also discussed the success of their hit single ‘Nakupenda’ and their growth within the international Amapiano scene.

Hefke hinted at the project when host Dotty asked about the duo’s plans for new music.

“There’s definitely a big project coming. I don’t know if I can mention this. But yeah, we got a little bit of Wizkid, a little bit of Jorja, a little bit of... You know, we got some things coming up.”

Asked whether the artists would appear on separate tracks or the same song, Hefke remained non-committal.

“It could be one song, it could be separate songs. Let’s see, let’s see. But yeah, we’re hoping that’s the next Naku Penda.”

Reid said the project would be released “definitely this year”, while Hefke indicated that it was expected during the South African summer.

The announcement follows the international success of ‘Nakupenda’, which features Nigerian singer Davido alongside Zlatan, Scotts Maphuma and Al Xapo. The track has reportedly surpassed 37 million Spotify streams and 20 million YouTube views.

During the interview, TXC described the collaboration with Davido as largely organic. Hefke said the singer responded quickly after she sent him the track, contrasting it with their earlier collaboration ‘Yebo’, which took about a year to complete.

“I sent it to him and he was like, ‘yes, uh, let’s do Lagos this weekend’,” Hefke recalled.

The recording took place at Zlatan’s studio, where Davido improvised ad-libs that later became a prominent part of the song.

“He was joking around on the mic... And now it’s the biggest part of the song. Like he was just fooling around and that actually made the whole song.”

The duo also discussed their approach to DJ performance, particularly Reid’s energetic style, which has earned her the description of the “dancing DJ”.

Reid said her movement on stage was directly connected to the music she was performing.

“If I’m in the front there, just know that I came from playing my song,” she said, adding, “Every song that I play is the song that I go out for.”

Hefke said women in DJ culture were increasingly defining their own approaches in a traditionally male-dominated space.

“How else are you gonna claim it by making it your own, you know, by the dancing, by whatever you bring to the table.”

TXC have not confirmed whether Wizkid and Smith will appear on the same track, separate songs or in what capacity they may contribute to the project. Further details are expected ahead of the planned South African summer release.

When asked whether the duo would premiere the new music on The Dotty Show, Hefke replied: “You will know first.”
