Ugandan hip hop artist Byg Ben Sukuya will launch his debut album Imbuka Eyi'Yange (This Is My Time) at The Square in Kampala, Uganda, on 15 September.
Imbuka Eyi'Yange features 15 songs produced over a three-year period.
“I am an artist who loves working with different producers because I believe in different sounds,” the rapper told Music In Africa. “So this album was worked on by Ugandan producers Wana, Baru Beats, Doto, Aethan Music and a UK-based Ugandan producer called Trigganomics who produced eight songs.”
The album will be available on major music platforms including iTunes, Spotify, Google Play, Deezer, Apple Music, Tidal, Amazon and Audiomack.
“I scheduled my album launch in September because ideally the months of August, September and October are hip hop months and a lot of hip hop-related events happen then. However, physical copies are already available for sale via Mobile Money.”
The artist admits that his debut album is quite commercial but insists that he has remained true to his African roots. He said that during the album's initial production stages several local producers wanted to steer his music in a direction that he didn’t agree with.
“There is this type of music in Uganda called kidandali,” he said. “Lots of producers have suggested that I start working with it in order to make quick money and fame, but that will never happen. I believe I am on the right path and even though my album is very commercial, it has organic elements that will catch your attention. The album cover artwork is handmade and the music itself is done in my native language, Lumasaba, from eastern Uganda.”
Local acts set to perform at the Imbuka Eyi'Yange launch include MC Yalla, Tucker HD, Prycee Teeba, Fasie MC, Keya Nemesis, Recho Rey & Kvan, Sharon Sento & Leumas, DJ Alza, and The Dropout.
The album launch is supported by Babana Basha Records and East African Records and sponsored by Club Beer, The Tribe UG, Radiocity 97FM and Bayimba Festival.
