Dumama + Kechou
Bio
Dumama and Kechou is a spiritual jazz duo from South Africa.
The future folk band comprises vocalist, instrumentalist and songwriter Dumama (born Gugulethu Duma), and German-born composer, multi-instrumentalist, producer Kechou (born Kerim Becker).
Dumama hails from the rural Eastern Cape and draws deep influence from celebrated composer and instrument builder Madosini, who also mentored and guided her songwriting process. Kechou represents a collision and merger of two worlds not easily combined without friction and tension, creating harmony in his expression and innovative creative process. He has produced and performed with different jazz-infused hip hop and Afro-fusion experiments in Germany, and different parts of Africa
Under the auspices of South African alternative record label Mushroom Hour Half Hour, the band released their debut album 'Buffering Juju' in March 2020, which was primarily recorded during a residency the two attended.
The Cape Town-based duo's album boasts some of the most revered jazz musicians in the country and around the world including Madala Kunene, Siya Makuzeni, Shane Cooper and Angel Bat Bawid.
