Maleek Berry
Bio
Maleek Berry (real name, Maleek Shoyebi) is a British-Nigerian producer based in the UK. He grew up listening to R&B singers Jodeci, Tevin Campbell and Boyz II Men; he names Michael Jackson as an influence as well. As a teenager he formed a group in church, writing and producing songs as teenagers. The union didn’t last long and Maleek was on his own soon.
Years later he obtained a degree in Computer Science and learned to play the piano. He collaborated with a few acts from the London scene and continues to do so.
In 2011, he came to Nigeria and through his relationship with Davido he made inroads into the Nigerian music scene. He produced rapper Sauce Kid’s ‘Carolina’ (2011). The song featured Davido and became one of the year’s popular tracks. He then produced Wizkid’s ‘The Matter’ (2013) which became popular as well with a video shot in London. Released just as Wizkid had contractual problems with his then record label Empire Mates, the song announced a different phase for the young artist.
Maleek Berry has since produced for several Nigerian artists notably ‘Finito’ (2014) for Iyanya and ‘Baby Hello’ (2014) for Wande Coal. He is signed to Wizkid’s record label, StarBoy Entertainment. His EP, 2016's 'Last Daze of Summer' was released on his Berry's Room label.
