Grammy Awards 2022: Here are Africa’s winners
The winners of the 64th annual Grammy Awards were announced from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas at the weekend, with Benin’s Angélique Kidjo picking up the Best Global Music Album Award.
Kidjo won the award for her Mother Nature LP, bringing her overall Grammy tally to five. She bested submissions by fellow African artists Rocky Dawuni (Ghana), Wizkid (Nigeria), Femi and Made Kuti (Nigeria), and Daniel Ho & Friends (US). Kidjo was also nominated twice in the Best Global Music Performance category, but lost out to Arooj Aftab (Pakistan) for her work ‘Mohabbat’. Other African nominees in that category were Femi Kuti, Burna Boy, Wizkid and Tems.
In her acceptance speech, Kidjo celebrated the various collaborators on the LP, particularly young African voices like Mr Eazi, Sampa the Great and Yemi Alade.
South Africa’s Black Coffee won the Best Dance/Electronic Album Award for Subconsciously, while Wouter Kellerman’s Pangaea lost to Stewart Copeland and Ricky Kej’s Divine Tides in the Best New Age Album category.
Black Coffee lauded the various collaborators on the project, who “believed in working with a smaller artist like myself and trusting me and trusting my ear.”
Africa went into this year’s Grammys with a historic nine direct nominations, its biggest contingent of nominees to date.
Meanwhile, R&B duo Silk Sonic, comprising Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak, won the coveted Record of the Year Award for ‘Leave the Door Open’, while Album of the Year went to Jon Baptiste for We Are.
