NEFCISA

The Music In Africa Foundation (MIAF) is proud of its partnership with the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) as a Strategic Implementing Partner (SIP) for its Social Employment Fund (SEF). Through this collaboration, MIAF is running a national programme that is creating jobs, addressing skills gaps, and strengthening South Africa's creative industries — in line with the SEF's overarching goal to generate work for the common good and build community value through employment, social contribution, and inclusive economic participation. Operating under the banner NEFCISA (National Employment Facility for Creative Industries in South Africa), the initiative is recruiting and training participants, matching them with host organisations, and has already placed 1 500 workers across the country — surpassing its original target of 1 000. NEFCISA is delivered through a network of 20 host organisations spanning five provinces, who are actively hosting participants and contributing to work for the common good across South Africa's creative and cultural industries. Key Objectives: Support employment and entrepreneurship in the creative industries. Offer skills development and training programmes. Foster partnerships between public and private creative sectors. Promote South African creativity at both provincial and national levels Foster community development through social contribution.

Music In Africa Gender @ Work is a three-year training programme aimed at upskilling and increasing the participation of female professionals in the African music sector. Launched by the Music In Africa Foundation (MIAF) in April 2019, the programme is connected to the MIAF’s ACCES music conference – a pan-African event held in a different African country every year. The programme marks the beginning of a more concerted effort by the Foundation to support the participation and inclusion of women in all facets of its programmes and the music sector in Africa as a whole. For cultural and creative practitioners and organisations operating in southern Africa, access to funding remains a major challenge. The COVID-19 pandemic has also had a massive impact on government policy, spending and the economy in general, and has seen spending on culture being moved further down the list of priorities. Further, the cultural and creative industries repeatedly cite four main areas where investment is needed for growth, which are increased visibility, mobility including access to new markets, finance and support structures.

The All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) has announced the nominees for its 2025 edition, with voting set to open on 10 September.

Burna Boy, DJ Maphorisa, Davido and El Grande Toto head the list with five nominations each.

The awards drew a record 10 717 entries this year, the highest since the event was launched 12 years ago. A 13-member jury shortlisted 343 nominees across 40 categories covering Africa’s five regions and the diaspora.

Nigeria’s Burna Boy and Davido, South Africa’s DJ Maphorisa and Morocco’s El Grande Toto head the list with five nominations each. They are joined by Senegal’s Mia Guissé and Ghana’s Moliy, who also secured five nods, underscoring the growing role of women in African music.

Shallipopi, one of Nigeria’s rising stars, earned four nominations, including Artist of the Year and Song of the Year for Laho. Other four-time nominees include Egypt’s Amr Diab, Tanzania’s Diamond Platnumz, South Africa’s Tyla and eSwatini’s Uncle Waffles, reflecting the strength of African pop, amapiano and Afro-house sounds.

Côte d’Ivoire’s Himra and Didi B, Gabon’s Eboloko and Emma’a, and DR Congo’s Fally Ipupa and Ferre Gola also made the shortlist with three nominations each. Nigeria’s Rema, South Africa’s Nasty C and Mawhoo, Morocco’s Jaylann and Tanzania’s Juma Jux are also competing with three nods. Ayra Starr has two nominations but will contest the prestigious Artiste of the Year category against Davido, Burna Boy and El Grande Toto.

The diaspora section includes DJ Snake, Niska, Tayc, Aya Nakamura, Darkoo and Deborah Lukalu among the nominees.

AFRIMA jury member Delani Makhalima said the 2025 list highlighted African music’s growing reach. “Twelve years in, we’re now here. This is global. This is AFRIMA, the biggest music entity on the face of the continent,” he said.

The awards will take place in Lagos from 25 to 30 November, featuring the AFRIMA Music Village, the Africa Music Business Summit and the main ceremony, which will be broadcast in over 80 countries.
