Call for applications: Indie Africa Masterclass in South Africa

The first edition of the programme, which features raw talent and select independent artists, offers South African artists an opportunity to showcase their live performance on a global scale.

The workshop will also make the musicians’ live recordings available across streaming, monetisation and download platforms worldwide.

The initiative will take place during Paradise Sound System’s week-long run in Johannesburg. Its aim is to address key issues currently facing independent artists such as developing global business and exploring options for untapped revenue models in 2020 and beyond.

The programme will feature guest speakers such as CEO and founder of Paradise Distribution Ralph Boege, recording, performing artist and label owner Zakes Bantwini as well as African music strategist Sarah-Jane Nicholson.

In addition, artists who are not ready to perform or do not get selected for the programme can still attend the free workshop which takes place on the 30 January.

“Our aim is to help independent African artists know their rights, understand revenue collection, build brands and become audience growth pros,” the organisers said.

The organisers are looking for 10 artists to get involved in the programme.

Eligible artists should:

• Perform at least 2 original songs (ie: not a remix or cover version)
• These songs haven’t been released on any platform before (with the exception of Soundcloud)
• Performing agrees to deliver all relevant data on the composition and lyrics (Clean Metadata)

• 3 x Mastered live songs (at the very least) which we will work with you to distribute worldwide and create a bespoke distribution plan with in collaboration with our offices in Berlin and San Francisco + the local team in South Africa.
