Headliners for African Legends Night in Accra unveiled

Now in its 11th year, the event, organised by Global Media Alliance (GMA), celebrates the unique musical styles and contributions of artists considered African greats.

Yvonne Chaka Chaka, affectionately known as the Princess of Africa, has graced the global music stage for decades with her powerful vocals and timeless hits, notably ‘Umqombothi’, and in 2016, she became the first female headliner at the African Legends Night. Beyond her musical career, Yvonne Chaka Chaka is known for her philanthropic work and advocacy for social causes.

Obrafour, a pioneering figure in the hiplife music genre, is best known for his thought-provoking lyrics and innovative rap style, while George Jahraa rose to popularity with his first album Driver Banza in 1990. Since then, more albums and hit singles have followed, including ‘Haka Dunia/Zanu Kade’, ‘Ashikele’, and ‘Asor’.

Kwabena Kwabena, known for his soulful ballads on romance, captured mainstream notice in 2004 with Aso. Following that, an impressive run of releases has grown his reputation as one of Ghana’s most outstanding songwriters today. His latest album Fa Me Saa was released in 2022.

They join other notable African headliners over the years including South African great Hugh Masekela, Freddy Meiway from Ivory Coast, Daddy Lumba, Kojo Antwi and Gyedu-Blay Ambolley from Ghana, Femi Kuti and 2Baba Idibia (Nigeria), Awilo Longomba and Kanda Bongoman (DRC), among others.
