A number of Indian artists will be taking part in the maiden ‘Festival of India-Lagos’ taking place on 13 August at Tafawa Balewa Square, Onikan, Lagos.
Anup Jalota, Sai Gargi and Yuvika Chaudhary will join Davido and some of his countrymen at the festival. Fuji artist Pasuma Wonder, Tee Mac, the drummer Ara, gospel singer Sammy Okposo are some of the Nigerian artists expected to feature at the event.
The musical performances are being sold as a contest, with some of the Nigerian artists going against their Indian counterparts. Says Ara about the event, “Nigerians are going be thrilled with the best of Ara.” The event will be used as propagation of the wealth of the Indian music heritage and as such is sponsored by the Indian Diaspora in Lagos and the International Society of Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON).
‘Festival of India-Lagos’ is supported by the telecom company MTN, Zee World, Gaurapad Charities and the Lagos State Government. Although the concert forms the centrepiece of the event, there will also be an international fair and Indo-Nigerian Cultural Expo.
Chairman of Festival of Indian-Lagos Planning Committee, Mr. Bolaji Rosiji explained the basis of the concert: “India is the fastest growing economy in the world and has the second largest SME network in the world. One of the objectives of this event is to revive the SME sector in Lagos State through a mutually beneficial development programme.”
Rosiji added that: “Anup Jalota is popularly known as the Emperor of Bhajans. He has won multiple awards globally and is coming to the festival with his full troupe.“Anyone who has heard this tabla drum player knows it sounds just like thunder. Pasuma Wonder has promised that since he has ‘home advantage’ he would be at his most entertaining form to musically challenge the Indian stars and do Nigeria proud.
“This historical event promises to deepen and extend bilateral synergy and collaboration in various sectors—economic, cultural and diplomatic relations—between the two great countries.”
