Listen to Mpho Sebina’s remake of Brenda Fassie’s Too Late For Mama

The single was produced by DJ Kenza and Favi Motsemme, with Black Coffee as executive producer. It was composed and written by Sello ‘Chicco’ Twala in 1989 and marks the 32nd anniversary of the original release.

“With this song, I honour the legendary African pop diva Brenda Fassie and how her story is the story of African song and artistry at its highest level,” Sebina said. “Through this song, I pay tribute to Ma Brrr and her beautiful soul and I give thanks to the incredible production and creative genius that is Chicco Twala.”

The song is a major inspiration behind Sebina’s career and is among the tracks she recorded nearly six years ago. She seeks to use the song to channel the same energy that Brenda Fassie brought to the music scene when she first performed it during the height of her career.

“I hope the message ‘Too Late For Mama’ resonates with the people of my generation across the world going through this time of anxiety and stress. For all the families grieving loss and hardships, I hope this song reminds us to exercise empathy,” Sebina said.

With a slew of successful releases under her belt, Sebina’s music career is currently on an upward trajectory. Some of her standout works include her sophomore release Lora and a collaboration with Major League DJz on the amapiano song ‘Dinaledi’. Other releases include ‘Loves Light’, ‘Black Butterfly’ and ‘No Evil’. Sebina has shared the stage with artists like Shekhinah, Musiq Soulchild, HHP, Freshlyground, Nnunu Ramogotsi, Shanti Lo, Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Louis Mhlanga. She draws influence from artists like Stampore, Sade, UB40, Boom Shaka and Mariah Carey.
