African music streaming platform Mdundo has entered into a partnership with London-based creative services company Platoon.
The deal was confirmed this week by Mdundo content acquisition and strategic partnerships head Umeadi Onyekwelu.
Founded in 2012 in Kenya and headquartered in Denmark, Mdundo boasts more than 20.3m monthly active users (MAUs) and recently announced $1m in payouts to rightsholders across the continent.
Platoon was launched in 2016 by industry expert Denzyl Feigelson and LoveFilm co-founder Saul Klein with the goal of supporting the independent distribution of music. Over the years, it has partnered with leading African musicians like Mr Eazi and Simi, as well as award-winning UK stars Stefflon Don and Jorja Smith.
Onyekwelu said the arrangement would “strengthen Mdundo’s music offering and increase Platoon’s reach within the African market in line with Mdundo’s ambitions for rapid growth across the continent towards 50 million MAUs by June 2025.”
The deal adds to a number of strategic partnerships by Mdundo this year. In June, the company entered into a licensing agreement with Universal Music Group to bring its extensive catalogue to users across the continent.
Mdundo also boasts deals with MTN Ghana, MTN Nigeria, Airtel Nigeria and Vodacom Tanzania, offering the telcos’ customers easier access to its premium service.
Meanwhile, Mdundo is accepting applications for licensing manager positions in Ghana and Nigeria. Interested professionals can apply here before 19 October.
