Namibia: Suzy Eises to host Hugh Masekela tribute gig

Masekela, a composer and singer of repute, died in late January after battling prostate cancer for some time.

The proceeds will go to Physically Active Youth, an organisation in Katutura that provides a safe and nurturing learning environment for young people from disadvantaged communities.

Eises will perform with a full band. She will be joined by South African jazz trumpeter Vaughn Fransch and Zimbabwean-born South Africa-based saxophonist Dan Shout.

“The event will celebrate the life of Masekela before, during and after exile," Eises said. "I had the distinguished honour to share the stage with Masekela and I always looked up to him as a young aspiring musician.

"Bra Hugh had a unique way of telling stories through his music and I believe it is befitting that as Namibians and fellow Africans we celebrate and honour a life well lived.”

Eises told Music In Africa that Masekela’s legacy had inspired her to give back to underprivileged members of society.

“Bra Hugh is a huge inspiration to me. He fought for the rights of others through his music. He contributed greatly to charity and was proud of African music and culture. I aspire to do the same. I love giving to those less fortunate and sharing the wealth of African music.

Eises said Masekela had many fans in Namibia. "We love his spirit and music. He told the African story. We were a part of that and we respect him,” she said.
