Nigerian rapper Falz to anchor TV comedy show
The rapper, who won an award for a comic role recently and has anchored a show on the channel in the past, will have his first episode aired on Friday 29 April.
Musicians are increasingly getting television gigs as stations (especially ones broadcasting across the continent) attempt to attract audiences by featuring some of the continent’s biggest stars. Falz’s appointment as host follows his countryman D’Banj, who was announced as co-host for the African version of US programme Lip-Sync Africa. The Bigger Friday Show was previously hosted by comedian Basketmouth, who is also Nigerian.
With Falz as host, the show, which is targeted at a young audience, has become more interactive as fans are encouraged to take part by sending videos of their best imitations of the rapper using Facebook, Instagram and Twitter using the hashtag #BFSChallenge.
Falz, son of a renowned lawyer, released his sophomore album Stories That Touch last year. The album has since received critical acclaim. And a short film made for one of its singles ‘Soldier’ was well-received. A new single, released independently of the album, debuted recently. The song, titled ‘Bahd, Baddo, Baddest’ features Olamide and Davido.
According to MTV Base, “The show, which is a mixture of entertainment and comedy, is part of the sparkling new entertainment campaign led by MTV Base called ‘My Life, My Base’. It will premiere on MTV Base (DStv channel 322) on Friday 29 April 2016.”
