Omawumi releases video for collaboration with Angelique Kidjo
Ahead of an album scheduled for release later in the year, Nigerian singer Omawumi has debuted the video for the single ‘Play na Play’. The much anticipated song features Beninoise Grammy award winner Angelique Kidjo.
‘Play na Play’ also features live production from acclaimed Nigerian producer Cobhams Asuquo, who was also responsible for the award winning ‘Wish Me Well’ by Timi Dakolo. The video, which was shot in the US, sees both singers trade verses and dances as both are dressed in traditional attires.
The forthcoming album comes after 2013’s Lasso of Truth, which contained the hit song ‘Bottom Belle’, a duet with highlife singer Flavour.
The forthcoming album will have Omawumi pushing herself in new directions by recording a full collection of songs live. According to a statement from the singer: “The new age singer, introduces fans and newcomers alike to a new musical journey by recording a completely live album.” Malian great Salif Keita is expected to be featured on the as yet untitled album.
'Play na Play’, a song about the need for caution, is Omawumi’s first single of 2016. It follows her last work—a cover of British singer Adele’s 'Hello'. Omawumi's reggae influenced version was included in Music in Africa’s versions of the song popular across the continent.
