South African maskandi musician Ihashi Elimhlophe has signed a deal with Universal Music Africa.
The partnership was announced by the company today.
“I have done many things by myself over the years, which has all brought me this far,” Ihashi Elimhlophe said. “Now it is time to partner up with a bigger force to take the Ihhashi Elimhlophe brand to newer heights. Universal has far-reaching resources that will allow me to achieve that which I cannot on my own. This time I am bringing a Grammy Award home.”
Universal South Africa managing director Sipho Dlamini said: “You often see us behind projects in the mainstream genres, whether it’s pop, R&B, hip hop or kwaito, but at Universal we take our responsibility from a cultural level very seriously.
“For us, while we are seen developing youthful projects, it is very important that we support our culture, our African culture, and make sure that we invest as much into those aspects of the music industry.”
With a music career spanning over three decades, Ihashi Elimhlophe is best known for his high output in the maskandi genre, releasing 28 albums to date. He is also known for 'Umvumo’, a song off his Siyabonga album.
He is expected to release his upcoming album Amawazawaza under Universal on 26 July.
“The album has the signature Ihhashi Elimhlophe sound the veteran is known for, fused with influences of the progressed new-age maskandi,” Universal said.
