SoundCloud has launched a limited beta programme for paid music downloads, giving selected artists the option to sell their music directly to fans through the platform.
SoundCloud CEO Eliah Seton.
The trial initially includes approximately 200 US-based Artist Pro creators with Fan Support enabled. SoundCloud said it plans to expand access gradually, with paid downloads expected to become available to all eligible creators later this year.
Under the new system, participating artists will retain 100% of each sale, excluding standard fees and taxes. The move forms part of SoundCloud’s broader efforts to strengthen direct relationships between artists and their most engaged fans.
The company said it sends more than 500 000 users to external services each year to purchase music. It also reported that 28% of artists surveyed either already sell downloadable music or are interested in doing so, with each group accounting for 14%.
“Artists should be able to build their audience in one place, on one platform,” SoundCloud CEO Eliah Seton said. “SoundCloud has always been where artists find their first fans and build real communities. We’re continuing to bring more of what they need to grow their careers into that same experience, while letting fans directly support the music they love.”
The launch comes as music platforms increasingly explore direct-to-fan models, including paid downloads and other products aimed at superfans. In March, Tidal introduced paid downloads, putting it in closer competition with platforms such as Bandcamp, which has long offered artists direct sales.
SoundCloud has also expanded beyond streaming through its partnership with elasticStage, which provides on-demand vinyl manufacturing and distribution.
The renewed interest in downloads comes despite the dominance of streaming, with some artists continuing to use digital purchases for releases that may appeal particularly to dedicated fans. Recent examples include artists making exclusive B-sides and live recordings available as downloads.
The paid-download initiative also comes amid wider debates about the role of artificial intelligence-generated music on digital platforms. Bandcamp has introduced restrictions on AI-generated music, while Tidal has stopped monetising machine-generated audio. SoundCloud has not announced a comparable policy.
The beta will initially be limited to selected US creators before wider availability later this year.
