Tiwa Savage releases Water and Garri soundtrack album
Nigerian singer Tiwa Savage has dropped the soundtrack album for her feature film Water & Garri. The project, comprising 10 songs across Afropop, R&B and hip hop, is available for streaming and download across all major digital platforms.
The soundtrack album, heralded by the single ‘Lost Time’, features fellow African stars like Olamide, Ayra Starr, Young Jonn, Aṣa, Richard Bona and Black Sherif.
The movie, produced by Everything Savage and Unbound Studio, can now be streamed on Amazon Prime Video in more than 150 countries worldwide after being picked up by the global streaming platform.
“People expect a certain sound from me, but in doing a soundtrack, I could experiment,” Tiwa Savage said. “[With my] African culture I either put it in my fashion or put it in my music, always. It’s because it’s beautiful to be African.”
The film, executive-produced by the singer, also marks her debut in a lead role. According to a statement, both film and soundtrack “fold together to reveal poignant cultural shifts and internal thoughts.”
In the film, Tiwa Savage portrays Aisha, an ambitious fashion designer who returns to her hometown after a decade in the United States. Aisha discovers significant changes, heightened violence and tense atmospheres. Reuniting with family, old friends and a former lover, she grapples with her past, confronting scars and guilt.
Filmed in Cape Coast, Ghana, the picture also stars Mike Afolarin, Andrew Bunting and Jemima Osunde.
“Developing and shooting my film from an idea to launching globally on Prime Video is a dream fulfilled,” Tiwa Savage said months back. “I am excited for my fans and newer audiences to experience this vulnerable side of me that I have never shown. Meji Alabi brought the story to life in such a beautiful way, and I cannot wait to share it with the world.”
An Afrobeats veteran, Tiwa Savage boasts multiple LPs to her credit, including Once Upon A Time, R.E.D and Celia.
The singer, who has collaborated with global superstars like Chris Martin of Coldplay, Beyoncé, Nas, Brandy and Sam Smith, will perform at Wembley’s OVO Arena in London, UK, on 6 October.
