Watch Gemma Griffiths’ A Girl From Harare documentary

The short film follows the release of her single ‘Kwale’, which pays homage to Kenya. It was directed and produced by Marc Neilson and Zetu with Jono Skinner on camera.

In A Girl From Harare, Griffiths narrates her story from inside a car. She travels across ten African countries exploring their roots, music, culture, food and the creativity to start writing. The documentary also chronicles the singer’s upbringing in Zimbabwe and how her singing abilities started in pre-school with the help of growing up in a family that loves music.

“Music is everything, it is praise, social commentary and reflection that connects us,” Griffiths said.

A Girl From Harare features Sauti Sol member Chamino (Kenya) and local artists Winky D, Ammara Brown, Charlie Kay and Levels who speak about their working relationship with Griffiths.

“We experience the beauty of her telling us about her life whilst trying it in with her music,” Griffiths’ team said. “This gives the audience insight of who Gemma is, and how this project A Girl From Harare was written when she was in a car, and recorded in 10 different African countries. This project allows the audience to appreciate her African roots through her creative storytelling and melodic music.”
