Musician and media personality Unathi Nkayi led the service, which featured many creatives who spoke in detail about Zahara’s contribution to the local music industry, with Nomcebo Zikode and Somizi Mhlongo expressing regret for not providing support to the ‘Loliwe’ hitmaker when she needed it most.
The memorial service also featured performances from Judith Sephuma, Nomcebo Zikode, Ringo Madlingozi, Brenda Mtambo, Vusi Nova and Buhlebendalo Mda. Among those in attendance were Zahara's husband Mpho Xaba, along with her family as well as Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi.
Zahara passed away on 11 December at a hospital in Johannesburg. Born Bulelwa Mkutukana, Zahara had been battling an unspecified illness for a couple of weeks. She will be laid to rest on 23 December in her hometown, Phumlani, Eastern Cape.
