MIALive: Adorkor Band to stream free gig from Ghana

The concert is supported by the Foundation’s Music In Africa Live (MIALive) project, which was launched in response to the COVID-19 pandemic to support players in the African music industry. The project assists music professionals with funding for digital projects in three grant types: Showcase, Capacity Building and Music Advocacy.

Founded in 2020, Adorkor Band has become popular within the local live music circuit. It combines soul, funk, Afrobeats, jazz and rock with notable Ghanaian rhythms of highlife, kpanlogo and agbadza.

The band says the upcoming concert, curated for neo Afro-soul lovers and heralding a live album later this year, offers the group a broader platform to stamp its mark on Ghana’s burgeoning live music scene.

“Being a part of MIALive shows us that we are doing something right in order to be selected and that all our hard work and efforts prior to this have not been in vain,” Adorkor Band lead singer Susan Augustt told Music In Africa, adding that being selected as a MIALive beneficiary is a welcome relief for the ensemble, as COVID-19 took a huge toll on local musicians, particularly those relying on gigs to sustain themselves.

“As a new band, it was the fear of the unknown because we did not know when the pandemic was going to end and it became difficult to manage the group. This initiative takes a lot of pressure off the band in terms of financing and allows us to bring our creativity and music to life without having to compromise too much on quality.

“We are able to showcase a more refined product and seek out more opportunities with the content to reach a larger audience. It also gives a lot of hope to other bands to remain optimistic.”
