The Music In Africa Foundation (MIAF) is proud of its partnership with the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) as a Strategic Implementing Partner (SIP) for its Social Employment Fund (SEF). Through this collaboration, MIAF is running a national programme that is creating jobs, addressing skills gaps, and strengthening South Africa's creative industries — in line with the SEF's overarching goal to generate work for the common good and build community value through employment, social contribution, and inclusive economic participation. Operating under the banner NEFCISA (National Employment Facility for Creative Industries in South Africa), the initiative is recruiting and training participants, matching them with host organisations, and has already placed 1 500 workers across the country — surpassing its original target of 1 000. NEFCISA is delivered through a network of 20 host organisations spanning five provinces, who are actively hosting participants and contributing to work for the common good across South Africa's creative and cultural industries. Key Objectives: Support employment and entrepreneurship in the creative industries. Offer skills development and training programmes. Foster partnerships between public and private creative sectors. Promote South African creativity at both provincial and national levels Foster community development through social contribution.

Music In Africa Gender @ Work is a three-year training programme aimed at upskilling and increasing the participation of female professionals in the African music sector. Launched by the Music In Africa Foundation (MIAF) in April 2019, the programme is connected to the MIAF’s ACCES music conference – a pan-African event held in a different African country every year. This connection enables the programme to reach new participants in a different African country every year. The programme marks the beginning of a more concerted effort by the Foundation to support the participation and inclusion of women in all facets of its programmes and the music sector in Africa as a whole. For cultural and creative practitioners and organisations operating in southern Africa, access to funding remains a major challenge. The COVID-19 pandemic has also had a massive impact on government policy, spending and the economy in general, and has seen spending on culture being moved further down the list of priorities. Further, the cultural and creative industries repeatedly cite four main areas where investment is needed for growth, which are increased visibility, mobility including access to new markets, finance and support structures.

The Arts & Culture Trust (ACT) has launched the ACT x Afro Geek Rising Talent Competition, a closed call for alumni of its Nyoloha Scholarship Programme in Visual and Digital Arts.

The submission deadline is 11 August 2026.

The competition forms part of ACT’s continued partnership with Afro Geek Fest, following the organisations’ first collaboration in 2025, when ACT alumni showcased their work at the festival. The 2026 initiative focuses on creating opportunities for emerging visual artists to interpret African heroes through original artwork.

Sponsored by XP-Pen, the competition invites eligible alumni to design a graphic novel or book cover featuring an African superhero. Participants may create an original superhero character or reinterpret an existing African hero in their own visual style.

According to the organisers, the competition aims to encourage visual storytelling inspired by African culture, mythology, futurism, fantasy, science fiction and community experiences.

Afro Geek owner Tapelo Zama said the partnership aligns with the festival’s mission of supporting African creatives.

“Our purpose as Afro Geek has always been to champion African storytellers, artists and innovators by creating opportunities for them to showcase their talent and build sustainable creative careers. Partnering with the Arts & Culture Trust on the Rising Talent Competition perfectly reflects that vision.”

He added that XP-Pen’s sponsorship would help support emerging artists.

“We’re also honoured to have XP-PEN as the sponsor of this initiative. By investing in emerging artists and providing them with the tools to bring their ideas to life, XP-PEN is playing an important role in nurturing creative excellence. Their support makes opportunities like this possible, and we are sincerely grateful to have them join us in empowering South Africa's rising creative voices.”

ACT chief executive Jessica Denyschen said the initiative provides a platform for young artists to engage with Pan-African storytelling.

“ACT believes deeply in the power of community and art. This partnership with Afro Geek gives ACT alumni an exciting opportunity to see their creativity in conversation with Pan-African geek culture, township pride and the visual language of heroes. It is especially meaningful to create space for young artists to imagine African heroes and to see themselves, their communities and their stories reflected back with pride.”

The winning artist will receive an XP-Pen drawing tablet.
