SA: Bassline Live to resume Lyric Theatre gigs in May

The company last hosted the Lyric Theatre concert series in March 2020 with Lira’s gig featuring South Africa-based Zimbabwean Afro-soul singer Berita. Following the South African government’s easing of restrictions on social gatherings, the series will kick off on 8 May with Ami Faku and Urban Village. They will be followed by Msaki and Moonga K on 15 May, and Zoë Modiga and alternative soul singer Zu on 22 May.

The May concert series is funded by the National Arts Council of South Africa’s Stream 2 Presidential Employment Stimulus Programme. As per current COVID-19 regulations, tickets to all three events are limited to 250 people and can be purchased here.

“I am honoured that I will be celebrating with music lovers at the Lyric Theatre,” Zoë Modiga told Music In Africa. “After releasing my sophomore album Inganekwane, I was fortunate to perform virtually in 2020 and I toured a sold-out series called An Intimate Story with Zoë Modiga & BandaBanda.”

“I would like to impact the souls of music lovers at the Lyric Theatre and create a world with them where we all journey into filling each other with whatever it is that we need.”

Bassline Live’s Brad Holmes said the concert series would celebrate of the company’s history with South African female musicians like Miriam Makeba, Dolly Rathebe, Thandi Klaasen, Busi Mhlongo, Sibongile Khumalo, Lira and Thandiswa Mazwai.

“With the focus of this three-concert series being the development of the music industry and employment, Bassline has hand-picked artists who are seriously on the rise and some who are soon to be rising stars,” he said. “Bassline will be continuing its support of our divas by headlining three female songbirds: Ami Faku, Msaki and Zoë, who are all unique in their own right.”
