Botswana: Watch Danielle Swagger’s I’m Dazed video
Réunion-based, Botswana-born rapper Danielle Swagger has released a music video titled ‘I’m Dazed’.
The song for the video is off Swagger’s last year’s 10-track solo album called Are You Ready? The track tells the story of a girl who has experienced uninvited trauma, but whose strength continues to liberate her from being a victim.
The video was directed and shot by Christophe Durand and Colors Island Productions in Reunion Island at a land mark called The Plain of Sands.
“The song is about being unapologetic about who we are in the present day and excelling despite the unforeseen circumstances of life,” Swagger said. “We do what we have to, we are our thoughts, therefore actions speak louder.”
‘I’m Dazed’ seeks to raise awareness about women who have been victims of abuse, molestation or rape.
“Through our experiences we learn by being scarred, I presume. I’m dazed means being stuck in a trance of knowing and not understanding. It is a form of confusion. When one has been a victim of trauma, they have to re-invent themselves accepting these terrible events are a part of life, they are expected to continue to live, grow and dream, but is it all so easy as it is said?”
A cryptomeria forest, an underground setting, and mystic imagery are all part of the ambience of the music video.
“When one is trying to heal, they are only at war with themselves,” she said. “With this song, I hope I get to motivate other women who find themselves under these circumstances. It is a voice to help victims take a stand for themselves, to know that we do believe them and to denounce this sort of behaviour which is common in families.”
