Boomplay Recap 2022: Black Sherif is most streamed artist in Ghana

Titled Boomplay Recap, the document offers data on the top musical works by male and female artists across different regions in Africa, including Ghana.

Black Sherif, who surpassed 100 million streams on the platform in September, rounded off the year as the top male artist in Ghana, an accomplishment he replicated on rival digital service provider Spotify. He is followed by Shatta Wale and Lasmid, respectively.

Black Sherif’s milestone corroborates Boomplay’s data from last year, casting the musician as the country’s biggest discovery, mostly due to his ‘Second Sermon’ and ‘First Sermon’, which were the two fastest-rising songs to reach 1 million streams.

Lasmid’s ‘Friday Night’ emerged as the most streamed Ghanaian song of 2022, followed by Black Sherif’s ‘Kwaku the Traveller’ and Kelvyn Boy’s ‘Down Flat’.

The top three most-streamed albums of 2022 are Black Sherif’s The Villain I Never Was, Sarkodie’s No Pressure and Kwesi Arthur’s Son of Jacob.

The top female artist are Wendy Shay, Gyakie, and Diana Hamilton in that order, with the same trio dominating the category on the platform last year.

Meanwhile, Boomplay says streaming on the platform increased by 248% in 2022 due to its 88 million monthly active users. It also said it now boasted a catalogue of more than 90 million songs.

“The authenticity and relevance of Boomplay’s data and charts as the accurate picture of music consumption are based on Boomplay’s user base, which is largely the lower and middle-class demographic, the largest population segment on the continent. Thus, it is more inclusive and captures the on-the-ground music taste and habits of music consumers,” the company said.
