The Music In Africa Foundation (MIAF) is proud of its partnership with the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) as a Strategic Implementing Partner (SIP) for its Social Employment Fund (SEF). Through this collaboration, MIAF is running a national programme that is creating jobs, addressing skills gaps, and strengthening South Africa's creative industries — in line with the SEF's overarching goal to generate work for the common good and build community value through employment, social contribution, and inclusive economic participation. Operating under the banner NEFCISA (National Employment Facility for Creative Industries in South Africa), the initiative is recruiting and training participants, matching them with host organisations, and has already placed 1 500 workers across the country — surpassing its original target of 1 000. NEFCISA is delivered through a network of 20 host organisations spanning five provinces, who are actively hosting participants and contributing to work for the common good across South Africa's creative and cultural industries. Key Objectives: Support employment and entrepreneurship in the creative industries. Offer skills development and training programmes. Foster partnerships between public and private creative sectors. Promote South African creativity at both provincial and national levels Foster community development through social contribution.

ACCES Conference and Showcase Festival is Africa's leading music industry gathering, bringing together the people shaping the future of the continent's music business. Artists, entrepreneurs, executives, investors, policymakers and cultural leaders from across Africa and around the world come to ACCES to build partnerships, exchange ideas, discover talent and create new business opportunities. Since its launch in 2017, ACCES has become the continent's premier platform for professional exchange and music market development. Combining a high-level conference with a curated showcase festival, networking, exhibitions and industry programmes, ACCES offers a unique space where creativity meets business and where African music connects with the global industry.

Music In Africa Gender @ Work is a three-year training programme aimed at upskilling and increasing the participation of female professionals in the African music sector. Launched by the Music In Africa Foundation (MIAF) in April 2019, the programme is connected to the MIAF’s ACCES music conference – a pan-African event held in a different African country every year. This connection enables the programme to reach new participants in a different African country every year. The programme marks the beginning of a more concerted effort by the Foundation to support the participation and inclusion of women in all facets of its programmes and the music sector in Africa as a whole. Over the three years, the programme will aim to address gender imbalances in the sector through training, lobbying, facilitating knowledge exchange and dialogues that foster the interest of women. The broader objectives of the programme are to: Provide industry training for women on critical music industry skills, focusing on: Stage management Electronic music production and recording Music business management Technical knowledge Provide an opportunity for both professional and aspiring women to benefit from the Music In Africa network and its broad range of activities in 2019, 2020 and 2021. Provide a solution-based platform in the form of a round table at ACCES with a view to identify challenges, discuss opportunities and lobby for the interests of female practitioners. Offer participants the opportunity to benefit from programmes offered by MIAF’s partners. Increase access to educational materials. Integrate participants in the broader ACCES programme to maximise experience and exposure to the industry. Record and present training materials on the www.musicinafrica.net, including but not limited to tutorials, templates and other best-practice materials. Communicate women-based themes that support the initiatives and messages of the programme. MAIN TRAINING ACTIVITIES Training in first country (Ghana): In the first year, participants will be trained on all aspects of stage management by a team of experienced stage managers from 10 to 17 November 2019. The programme will offer robust classroom training as well as practical, hands-on training in which participants will also be given the opportunity to manage various aspects of the ACCES performance programme. Training in second country: The second training iteration will take place at ACCES 2020 when the programme will diversify its course to include music production lessons and training on other music business topics. A round-table platform will also be introduced to coincide with the ACCES programme. Training in third country: The third training iteration will take place at ACCES 2021 in a different country, offering an advanced course. With less access to professional hardware, Bamanya takes an audacious route — building Africa’s first handmade modular synthesizers from circuitry salvaged from the city’s electronic graveyards. The unique sonic footprint of Bamanya’s creations is a textured blend of traditional Ugandan influence, the raw energy of Gqom and the propulsive rhythms of global house.

From his workshop in Kampala, Uganda, Brian Bamanya, the artist known as Afrorack, is launching a sonic revolution. As the creator of Africa's first handmade modular synthesizers [1], ingeniously built from salvaged electronics, Afrorack’s approach is a jolt of raw authenticity in a digital music landscape that can feel as sterile as a "white box" room. His tangible, imperfect instruments inject a much-needed physical personality back into the electronic soundscape, proving true innovation is built from scratch, not bought.

Why Build from Scratch?

For most electronic artists in the global North, acquiring new hardware is a matter of budget and brand preference. For these musos, online retailers and local music shops pave the path to owning a sought-after Moog or Buchla synthesizer, but for a producer in Kampala, that path is riddled with obstacles. Prohibitive price tags associated with instrument fabrication are only the starting point.

Exorbitant international shipping fees, steep import taxes and a near-total absence of local distributors create a formidable economic and logistical barrier, effectively placing these creative tools out of reach for many African musicians.

This is the reality that confronted Bamanya. Being unable to access the tools of his trade was more a fundamental challenge to his artistic identity than simply an inconvenience. His response was not to abandon his vision but to sidestep the entire commercial ecosystem and forge his own solution. The decision to build his own modular synthesizer from scratch was more than a clever workaround — it was an act of profound ingenuity and creative resistance.

By sourcing his own components from salvaged electronics and mastering the art of circuit design, Bamanya declared his independence from a system designed to exclude him. It was an assertion of artistic sovereignty, transforming a limitation into a defining feature of his work. The spark of invention was about more than making music. It was about forging the very means of the music’s creation.

The Anatomy of an Afrorack Synth

While commercial synthesizers are born within sterile factories using precise components, an Afrorack synth begins life amid the sprawling electronic graveyards of Kampala. The process is a form of urban archaeology, with Bamanya sifting through discarded radios, forgotten televisions and obsolete computer hardware in search of his sonic gold. This hunt for materials provides a poignant commentary on the global e-waste crisis, a problem that, according to a 2024 UNITAR report, is accelerating dramatically [2].

However, where the world sees junk, Bamanya sees a treasure trove of transistors, resistors and capacitors, each with a potential voice for his next creation. He breathes new life into these abandoned electronics, transforming them from environmental hazards into instruments of profound creativity.

Crucially, with the history attached to these salvaged parts, they bring more than just their function. Unlike their modern counterparts, vintage components are often imperfect. Their values may have drifted over time, and their performance can be unpredictable, but for Afrorack, this isn’t a flaw. It's the source of the magic with this "component drift" imparting a warmth, grit and instability that digital models and even modern analog synths will struggle to emulate.

For example, a filter's unique, gritty sweep might be thanks to a capacitor from a 1980s television, its aged character now a permanent, audible feature in the music of tomorrow. The resulting instrument is not just a collection of circuits, but a living collage of electronic history.

Fusing Sound and Circuitry

Sourcing the parts is only the first step in a complex equation for Afrorack. The true alchemy happens at the workbench, where disparate components get meticulously fused into a cohesive whole.

This stage is a masterclass in precision, demanding a hand displaying a surgical steadiness and the mind of an engineer. Building a stable musical instrument from salvaged parts requires countless points of connection, each one made with a soldering iron to create a reliable pathway for electricity and, ultimately, sound.

The fundamental principles of creating strong, reliable bonds are universal, whether in large-scale industrial fabrication or microelectronics. Industrial fabricators rely on specialized welding processes to preserve the integrity of large-scale structures [3]. Bamanya’s work operates on a much smaller scale, where soldering — not welding — creates the electrical connections that hold the instrument together. Each tiny, shimmering solder joint is a critical weld in his instrument’s architecture.

A single cold joint or an imprecise connection can introduce unwanted noise or, worse, silence an entire section of the synthesizer. It is a painstaking process where the choice for every connection is deliberate, a critical link in the sonic chain that determines the synth’s stability, voice and character. In this intricate dance of heat and metal, the abstract idea of a circuit is transformed into a tangible, sound-making reality.

The Sound of Kampala: Afrorack's Musical Identity

The ultimate question, then, is what these homemade modular machines sound like. The answer lies at a compelling intersection of worlds. The music is alive with the unpredictable, organic textures that only a handmade instrument can produce, a sonic fingerprint of its salvaged-part DNA. This inherent experimentalism, full of evolving drones and chaotic bleeps, is the voice of the machine itself.

Yet, this exploration is never unmoored. It is firmly anchored by the propulsive, syncopated rhythms of Afrorack’s Ugandan heritage and the minimalist drive of weaving together contemporary genres like techno, abstraction and acid.

Instead of simply importing Western synth-pop tropes, Bamanya uses his creations to forge a new dialect for electronic music, speaking a global language of synthesis with a distinctly East African accent. The sound is both futuristic and deeply rooted [4].
