BIO
Jared Mombinya is an artist from Kenya.
Jared Ochanda Mombinya, popurarly referred to as Mombinya is a musician from East Africa,Kenya.Hailing from the Western parts of the country, the county of Nyamira,Jared Mombinya is well known for his profound expertise of playing Obokano and singing alongside the eight stringed instrument.
Mombinya was born on June 27, 1987,in the village of Gesure,Manga District;and growing up in the villages,he fell in love with the Obokano,at a younger and hearing his grandfather play it occasionally,he became excited in knowing how to play and sing alongside it.
His grandfather,Ochanda took it to his responsibility to train Mombinya after realising the passion and the talent in him.
It is after this that Mombinya joined music festivals in schools, and using his skill was able to take his school's upto national levels and in all occasions.
After graduating from secondary school in 2007,Jared Mombinya decided to venture into the music industry, something that he said was very hard at the time considering the fact that the residents and media in general never took the obokano musicians and local artistes seriosly at the time.
To begin making a name for himself,Mombinya went into their tea farm, and convinced his mother that she would allow him to solely pluck tea and sell,so as to raise capital for a speaker and a microphone.
Mombinya could wake up at 3 o'clock in the morning and go into the farm, plucking tea up until the whole day. This went on consecutively until 5 months down the line, when the villagers began gossiping that he was going to become sick over such a sacrifice.
At the time tea was only twenty shillings a kilogram, and therefore,it took him six months to raise money enough to buy a single mixer and a speaker which he could use to resume his career.
With no money for motorcycle,Mombinya depended only on wellwishers and friends, whom sometimes would get tired of him leading to his walking from home to the market place where he would go on to entertain the locals in an attempt to make a name for himself and create a fanbase.
It is at this various market places that people began discovering his talent. It is here also that Mombinya met friends of the same interest, with whom he says would join him but later on left out to pursue other careers after the realisation of how difficult the struggle was.
Mombinya kept moving on,only depending on the little capital that came from the tea farm for the upkeep of the day to day activities, praying that one day, people will discover his talent and call him to their various festivals and in in this case, wedding and government occasions.
In the early 2014,Mombinya met with a veteran local musician, who saw his talent and promised to take him to the studio and have his music recorded. Therefore,in the following year,he was able to record and release his first full recorded studio album dubbed,'Mombinya Classic'.
Through the help from the studio and the already available fanbase in social media,Facebook,he was able to locally promote his release, and it is here that the hit son,'Nkieke Kwarire' from the album was born. The song, which speaks about how a young person had refused going to school and was resenting how his friends and agemates who went to school were now living a lavish life ,having huge stomachs ahead of them, became an instant sensation.
Little did Mombinya know that the song was going to become an all time people's favourite and the beging of his long time music career.
It is in the year 2016,when the song had already picked airwaves, leading to its nomination as the song of the year and Mombinya as the New artist of the year in the Gusii Music Awards,in which it won.But even with this kind of recognision, the people still did not take seriously ,the obokano, which shunned away cooperate investors and labels from Mombinya at the time.
He kept the struggle going, and using the little amount he'd generated,he bought a sound system, with which he would be called on local events, and in marjet places when not invited anyelwhere.
It is in this events that Mombinya met like minded individuals again, who wanted to come together and build up a team of performance with an aim of reaching a wider audience, mentoring the young talents ,exposing their talents and exposing them, therefore creating a job for the struggling economy in the villages of the Abagusii region.
Here ,they would go to varios schools, from where they gave a chance for young musicians to expose their talent, and hence mentor them afterwards.
This went on for a whole year up until the mid of 2019,when Mombinya shut it down due to lack of enough capital. Then Covid 19 set in and it was only a matter of time before the whole group could disintegrate and Mombinya realising that,he took it to his hand to officially employ the 12 members as members of his crew in which 2are instrumentalists, others are dancers and one a music producer.
But unfortunately, most are not able to be with him in various functions due to the fact that there is no enough caputal to cater for them.
'This has led to only one or two people available in most of my and the rest slowly sinking into the verge of lost dreams.Something that really hurts me so much to see,'says Mombinya.
The dream to buy a land and someday have a place in which like minded and talented individuals would come together in one goal was halted .A problem caused by capital constraint as the main factor .
'It has been very challenging to cope up with the situation since many events i go are local,i meet daily with very talented young people and it really pains my heart to see that i cannot be able to uplift them upto a point where they can be able to change their lives.Music is a career, and i am into it to prove to the world so,and i therefore hope that one day i may be in a position to do so',says Mombinya.
In 2020,while performing in an event in Nyamira,Mombinya met with his beautiful wife,Leah Kwamboka, with whom they decided to get married and start a life.Together, they have a daughter.
'It is my hope that i will be able to show my daughter, and all younger generations the way, that i may be able to ascertain that through,my organisation,Mombinya Classic, all is possible',says Mombinya.
Due to the fact that all events were shut down with the commencemwnt of Covid -19,Jared Mombinya has only but been operational in a few months now.
With his dedicated team of twelve members,he has built his brand and is still wishing to grow and expand into greater lengths and heights given the chance and opportunity to.
Jared Mombinya has his music in his Youtube channel, dubbed,Mombinya Classic tv,in which he has taken into his responsibilty to share all his performances,in an attempt to prove to the world that traditional Gusii music is an asset that should be conserved and shared to the whole in good faith and that all things are possible.
'In my music,i sing only about major life happenings and things that we go theough on and on in our day to day life, there is an aspect of comedy in it ,engulfed in the spirit of a deep Gusii culteru which a sensation of various lessons for the society to learn',says Mombinya, while holding up his daughter.
Mombinya is wishing for anyone who has a good heart for culture and raising new talent to do so,by supporting him and his team in any way as possible. As the dream to globalize, and spread their wings is valid and can only be proven so by those with a willing heart and a passion to share the Gusii culture he is embracing through his music.
