The initiative spotlights emerging artists through editorial support and global playlist placement. As part of the programme, Thando Zide will be featured on Apple Music’s Up Next playlist, which is curated by the platform's editorial team to showcase rising talent from around the world.
Thando Zide, who was raised in Soweto, studied at Johannesburg’s National School of the Arts, where she developed her skills in orchestral performance, choir and a cappella music.
She has collaborated with several South African artists, including Manana, Nduduzo Makhathini, Kelvin Momo, Jabulile Majola and Nomfundo Moh. Her debut EP, Umvulo, was released in 2023 and featured tracks such as iNtwenhle and iLanga Lakho.
The announcement coincides with the release of her debut album, Ku Ngawe. The 11-track project blends R&B and soul and features songwriting contributions from Msaki, Manana and Ami Faku.
“This selection and recognition by Apple Up Next as an emerging and independent artist is a great honour, truly,” Thando Zide said. “And it comes at a time of great reflection for me. This recognition and support from Apple is evidence that all those challenging moments were necessary. This makes the hard work put in behind the scenes worth it. So, I’m incredibly grateful for this opportunity.”
Apple Music’s Up Next programme highlights emerging artists through playlist features and editorial promotion across the platform. Previous artists selected for the initiative include Billie Eilish, Burna Boy, Tems, Rema, Megan Thee Stallion, H.E.R., Daniel Caesar, Khalid and Victoria Monét, among others.
