African talents feature in American Music Awards nominations
'One Dance', a song by American artist Drake that features Nigeria's Wizkid and Kyla, has been nominated for an American Music Award in the Favourite Song – Pop/Rock category.
'One Dance' was nominated alongside Adele's 'Hello' and Justin Bieber's 'Love Yourself'. The chart-topping track was co-produced by South African talent DJ Maphorisa (of popular house act Uhuru) who also featured Wizkid on his single 'Soweto Baby'. The song was released along with 'Pop Style', which features rap greats Jay-Z and former D'Banj associate Kanye West.
Scheduled for 20 November, the American Music Awards pay tribute to iconic artists who are doing well. The event will also feature performances from today's top artists.
Wizkid is making brilliant progress in his career. Born and raised in a middle-class Lagos district called Surulere, the talented artist released his debut album in 2011 and has exploded in popularity in his home town and abroad with many international hits, including 2014's 'Ojuelegba'.
Wizkid's name has appeared in a number of top awards, such as the MTV Europe Music Awards (MTV EMAs) and MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMAs). This year the artist became a darling of the West, securing collaborations with artists like Chris Brown, Trey Songz and R. Kelly.
Drake leads the pack at this year's American Music Awards, with a record 13 nominations. The previous record holder for the most nominations in a single year was Michael Jackson, who was up for 11 trophies in one night in the 80s, so this is obviously a big day for Drake.
