04 Dec 2020 - 10:07
Afro-fusion musician Burna Boy’s Twice As Tall was the most streamed Nigerian album on Spotify of 2020 with more than 64 million streams since its release in August.
This is according to The Top Charts Naija, which compiled the list based on the albums that were released this year.
The news follows the singer’s second consecutive nomination at the 63rd Grammy Awards. It also sees Burna Boy continue his dominance on the music streaming platform. Last year, the musician was Spotify’s top African act with 11.2 million monthly listeners.
Twice As Tall beat Made in Lagos by Wizkid and Celia by Tiwa Savage, which claimed the No 2 and No 3 spots with 31 million and 15.1 million streams, respectively.
Omah Lay’s EP Get Layd secured the No 4 position on the chart with some 10 million streams. The project has also amassed more than 100 million streams on Audiomack since it was launched in May. Adekunle Gold’s Afropop Vol. 1 followed with 9.6 million streams. Occupying the sixth position is 2Baba’s Warriors with 9.18 million streams, while Davido’s A Better Time came in at No 7 with 9.15 million streams.
Other artists whose releases made the list include Fireboy DML’s Apollo with 7.93 streams, Kizz Daniel’s King of Love with 7.69 million and Niniola’s Colours & Sounds with 7.61 million streams.
Spotify is not available in Nigeria. However, it has been widely reported that in 2021 the company will make a foray into Africa's most populous country, which boasts some 99 million internet users, representing 46.6% of the county's population.
Meanwhile, in South Africa, Kabza De Small’s claimed the top three spots for the most-streamed albums with I Am the King of AmaPiano: Sweet & Dust, Scorpion Kings Live and The Return of the Scorpion Kings. Rapper Nasty C came in at No 4 with Zulu Man With Some Power, while Samthing Soweto’ Isphithiphithi is at No 5.
Globally, Puerto Rican rapper and Latin Grammy Award winner Bad Bunny’s YHLQMDLG is the most streamed album with 3.3 billion listens. He was followed by Canadian singer The Weeknd’s After Hours and US rapper Post Malone’s Hollywood’s Bleeding. British acts Harry Styles and Dua Lipa completed the global top five with Fine Line and Future Nostalgia respectively.
