Shazam tips Nigeria’s Bloody Civilian for global success in 2024
Music discovery platform Shazam has included Nigerian singer Bloody Civilian in its annual breakthrough predictions list, placing her among artists poised for global recognition in 2024.
Boasting 300 million global monthly users, the Apple-owned app says its unique ability to accurately predict the next breaking artist makes it a “reliable and invaluable tool for both artists and fans.”
Bloody Civilian was spotlighted in a 10-name list comprising five artists who have the potential to break out globally in 2024 and five artists who are gaining popularity regionally.
The Nigerian singer and songwriter made her Shazam chart debut in April 2023 with ‘I Don’t Like You’. Later in the year, her debut EP Anger Management reached the top 10 in the Afrobeats albums chart in 69 countries worldwide, reaching No 1 in nine. Her streams on editorial playlists also grew by over 50% in the last six months of the year.
“People are most likely shazaming my music in Ubers,” Bloody Civilian, who was featured on the soundtrack of Marvel’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, said.
Last year’s predictions list, which included Nigerian Instagram star and musician Carter Efe, saw 80% of the artists reaching Apple Music’s Daily Top 100 across 171 countries, and seven of the 50 artists peaking in Shazam’s Global Top 200.
“Based on Shazam’s uniquely predictive data and algorithms, and coupled with the expertise of Apple Music’s global editorial team, this incredible selection of artists shows early indicators of future growth – early and consistent momentum in Shazam activity, as well as discovery trends in more than one country,” a statement reads. “It’s a remarkably global and diverse bunch, hailing from 21 countries and spanning sounds from French pop to contemporary gospel.”
Along with the announcement, Shazam has unveiled its annual Predictions 2024 playlist, a 50-track selection by artists that are poised to have a breakthrough year.
