Shazam charts launch in 12 African countries

The initiative, which includes new city charts for each country, will be updated daily, ranking the most Shazamed tracks in a country in the past week.

The development brings Shazam’s chart roster to some 70 national charts, about 1 500 city charts, 30 discovery charts, 60 global and national genre charts and one global chart.

The African countries which will benefit from the Top 200 charts include Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya and Tunisia, as well as Algeria, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Uganda and Mozambique. The others are Zambia, Senegal, and Tanzania.

In Asia, the charts will be featured in the UAE, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, the Philippines and Vietnam.

Shazam currently boasts over 225 million monthly active users, generating more than 1 billion song recognitions per month.

In the past couple of years, buoyed by Afrobeats’ growing global repute, songs by leading African artists such Kizz Daniel, Black Sherif, CKay, Amaarae and Master KG have all become Shazam Global No.1 singles.

Meanwhile, earlier this year, the platform, created by London-based Shazam Entertainment and acquired by Apple in 2018, unveiled a new concert discovery feature to its platform, promising increased exposure for artists.
