BIO
Jabulani Magubane
Born 16 November 1954
• After singing with school choirs and forming some gospels groups, joined the local jazz in band in Sobantu Village, Pietermaritzburg called “The Blue Quavers”.
• Worked auditioned for Gibson Kente`s “Beyond a song cast” and worked with him for a short time.
• Political pressures mounted forcing him into exile in 1976.
• While in exile managed to do both military duties and pursue life long love for music.
• Founder member of Amandla Cultural Ensemble of the ANC in 1978 which was later directed by Jonas Gwangwa, famous trombonist, composer, arranger with whom he worked extensively.
• Toured the world with Amandla Cultural Ensemble: Asia, Africa, Europe and Latin America.
• Served the group in different capacities e.g. political commissar, spokesperson for the group deputy director, singer, and bass guitarist.
• Composer of numerous songs including “Matola” a highly favoured piece among fellow exiles.
• Started practicing on an old battered trombone in 1984 and received a new one from Oliver Tambo after the President saw him struggling with a battered instrument.

• Enrolled for ethnomusicology and sat for grade 5 theory of music when Amandla relocated to Zimbabwe in 1990.
• Repatriated back into the country in February 1992.
• Teamed with McCoy Mrubata in 1993 and formed one of the formidable bands in the county called McCoy and Friends.
• Obtained grade 8 Trombone performance through Royal schools of music in 1996.
• Tshwane University of Technology Alumnus.
• Obtained National Diploma in Music and B. Tech Music and Music Technology from Tshwane University of technology in 2002.
• Since returned home, has worked with McCoy Mrubata and many jazz artists like Mc Coy Mrubata,Jonas Gwangwa,Victor Ntoni,Prince Lengoasa,and many more.
• Holds two certificates in Sound Engineering from Damelin and one from Emendy Colleges (Music Mixing and Mastering)
• Worked as a Director of SA Army Bands from 1997 to 2014 and now retired.
• Still performing with a wide range of musicians around Johannesburg and Pretoria
• Mixed and mastered fellow former member of Amandla Cultural Ensemble`s CD “AMATHABIZOLO” released in 2017
