BIO
Some of Africa’s most inspiring modern sounds came from Remmy Ongala, the Zaire-born guitarist and vocalist who made his mark in Dar es Salaam with his band, Orchestra Super Matimila. Blending Soukous, East African guitar work, and Tanzanian rhythms, Ongala created “intellectual dance music” — songs that were both deeply meaningful and irresistibly rhythmic.
His music often addressed issues such as poverty, injustice, corruption, AIDS, and love, yet his soulful voice and melodic guitar playing kept his performances vibrant and uplifting.
Born in the Kivu region of eastern Zaire, Ongala first performed as a drummer and vocalist with Bantu Success. After taking a short break in 1966, he returned as a guitarist and later worked with several Zairian bands, including Success Mwachame, Mickey Jazz, and Grand Mike Jazz. In 1968, he moved to Tanzania to join Orchestra Makassy, where his career flourished.
Remmy Ongala passed away in 2010, leaving a lasting legacy in East African music.
