Reggae Singer / Songwriter Biography
Roots rock reggae singer/ songwriter Soul Rebel hails from the town of Linstead, St. Catherine in Jamaica. Born Julan Samuels, Soul Rebel’s childhood was filled with musical influences. John “Screw” Samuels, her father who played as a “Studio One” drummer on several songs from “The Soul Defenders” catalog and other bands under the regime of the legendary reggae producer Coxsone Dodd. “Soul Defenders” guitar player Ronald “Privy” Clarke brought her dad to “ Sir Coxone” as a very young man well before Soul Rebels birth and “Iyah Privy” as she calls him, lived long enough to later mentor Soul Rebel herself.
As a child with music theory and keyboarding lessons on a Saturday, church choirs on a Sunday and the Jamaican Cultural Development Commission programs throughout her schooling years, her love for the performing arts grew feverishly.
Much of her experience and artistic development took place at her father John Screw’s Tabbath Production Studio in Linstead, St. Catherine. With more stage-show experiences she developed a craft for the stage all her own. Her soulful techniques, mellow tones and strong melodies take us back to the authentic reggae vocal stylings along with a sing-jay blend.
Before the great “lock down”, Soul Rebel had been on the road in North America, performing in Maryland and the Washington DC area on behalf of the Linstead “Maya” Football Club. Shortly after there was no movement. But there would still be music. The artiste would be in the recording studio laying vocals for months during the pandemic. As a result
